Long-distance passenger trains are an endangered species in New Zealand. Ten years ago at least seven major lines were still served. Nowadays there are only three services left and even their future is in constant peril as the government refuses to hand out any subsidies. Good reason to use two of the remaining services as long as they still exist and explore the three major cities of New Zealand on the way: Auckland, Wellington, and Christchurch.
